The following is one of my favorite de-motivational posters of all time.

Out of all the skills I have developed as a student, an employee, heck as a person, procrastination is probably the most refined tool in my arsenal. It’s the one magical skill that transcends every aspect of my life. Why this is I really cannot explain, but procrastination has a power unlike anything else we’ve known on this planet. Perhaps larger than God himself.

There are always things that I should do but always seem to put off for later. Does the grass really need cut right now? I’d start cleaning out the garage, but I have no place to put the stuff. That homework project isn’t due until next week anyway. Is the toilet really that dirty? I know this feature is enabled in everyone, but I seem to be hard wired for it and it’s set to “default”. And we won’t even talk about work.

What may be more irritating personally for me is procrastinating away the things I want to do. My Father’s Day gift this year was a DVD recorder, which is something I’ve really been wanting to archive (a) some of my home movies, especially with my hard drive camcorder, and (b) a bunch of stuff on my DVR box. I’ve had it for over two weeks now, and guess how much stuff I’ve archived.

Zip.
Zero.
Nada.

I have no idea why I haven’t done any of it. Even though the recording process is minute-to-minute (ie. A thirty-minute TV show has to direct dub so the recorder is running for thirty minutes) and I can watch whatever the hell I want on another channel, I just have not taken the initiative to start recording. Incidentally, this is also holding up my eventual move to dish.

Folding laundry, going grocery shopping, walking the dog, getting my vehicle inspected, changing the oil, calling about a simple service…all of these things have been put off by me in the last couple of days. Hell, I had a great idea for something better to write about today.

Too bad I put off writing it down.

Well, lookie here.  One week went by and I already blew my resolution – dammit!  If I really want to play the sympathy card, I could always point out that the last two weeks have been basically a living hell.  From Tuesday the 13th (not long after I posted last) until yesterday I have been in full-fledged travel mode.  Four trips were 300 mile round trip, all day affairs to take care of a family emergency and subsequent issues.  The other four days I spent in the land of hockey…err, college basketball, sitting behind a corporate internet connection which frowns on personal sites.

Enough with my self-complaining, though.  I don’t have a complete set of thoughts today, but instead random neurological bits.

- My indication that I’m finally becoming a business traveler – I got through the security check in time to join a conference call.  Too bad my work laptop doesn’t have a wireless adapter.  And I don’t have teeth of Blue.

- With the stress I went though during our family emergency I lost about five pounds.  Thanks to my North Carolina host and our week-long barbecue tour, those five pounds should be comfortably back.  A special shout to Courtney’s in Clover, SC – great way to close out the tour!  Next time – Lexington and US 52.

- There’s an old gripe about Lindberg being able to land his planes on a runway crowded with French people without radar, but that we won’t take off today in fog.  I realized that gripe when waiting for my flight back to Pittsburgh on Friday and the Charlotte airport was closed for lightning.  From 4:45 to 7:30 pm the terminal was closed three times – the last time at 6pm when we had just finished loading.  Sitting on a plane for one and one half hours not knowing when that plane will leave – sucks.

- Thursday night would mark the first time I’ve ever seen a batter swing his bat into the stands.  Charlotte Knights catcher Pascual Matos, hitting .148 on the season, went 0 for 4 on the night but provided the non-play highlight of the game when he put too much effort into a swing & miss.  The righty took a mighty cut, and while missing feebly managed to lose control of his bat.  The bat flew over the visiting Norfolk Tides’ dugout on the third base line, hit a seat halfway back in the lowest level of seating, and was caught on the fly by a man sitting in the first row of the next highest seating section.  Norfolk could have used this guy in the field.

OK, time to eat crow – I didn’t follow through with my resolution to keep this site updated.  D’oh!!!

This spring was very busy for me, and fortunately this summer looks to be slower so hopefully good habits will emerge.  Crawl before I walk time…I’m gonna try to update at least once per week.  Two in a week would rock.  Any more and I’m golden, as opposed to the lead that I am now.
