Life was grand last week with the wonderful opening to winter. Eight inches of fresh powder (three to four more than expected) covered the ground and roads and was accompanied by a brutal cold, shutting school for two days. It was not to last, though, as the warmth proceeded to kick in and melt the winter wonderland. As if not torture enough, the rain began to fall and clear away what the temperature couldn’t. Now it’s a soggy mess out there. The best season of the year should last longer than three months, and the best precipitation needs to fall a lot more than it does.

- Extremely tired today and am having trouble motivating myself. Biggest culprit likely is the new meds I’m taking. Stepping up the dosage and drowsiness is a side effect. Good for sleeping, but not for working.

- Finally saw Pirates 3 over the weekend, and I must say disappointing. The effects were still cool as hell and the base plot was OK, but there were WWAAAYYYY too many subplots going on. Note to the writers – not every character needs a full story. It makes the movie long, hard to follow, and winds up as a jumbled pile of mush.

- Simpsons Movie comes out on December 18th. Woo-hoo! It looks like with this damn writer’s strike we’ll be getting a lot more use out of our Blockbuster Online plan. These days they changed their plans, but back when we signed up we got unlimited in-store return/rentals. No use changing now. And I weep for John C. Reilley. A fine actor, he is reduced to doing these shitty roles in bad Will Ferrell styled comedies. This new one I saw on ads over the weekend looks terrible.

- As I record this through the day, the news breaks that Vick gets 23 months in the federal pen. Good. Should’ve gotten more.

- I have no trouble channeling Ebenezer Scrooge for a moment: I really despise the Salvation Army kettles. Those little bells pierce the eardrums and they stand outside almost every store I frequent. Also, as a member of the modern cashless society I rarely carry spare change. I know some of the kettle-mongerers look at me dirty when I pass by without chipping in, but the damn things don’t have debit card swipers.

- I’m getting used to Huggins running the hoops team, and the last couple of games against Auburn & Duquesne were fun to watch. This could be a surprising year.

- Not a lot of excitement around these parts over the Fiesta Bowl. While the disappointment of missing the title game is quite understandable, its still weird to think that a BCS bowl is a “letdown”.

- Still, it could be worse. WVU fans could also be Panther fans like me. Carolina’s playoff chances are pretty much nil after yacking up another listless loss, this time to Jacksonville. It’s one thing to note that the QB carousel has been a killer, but that still doesn’t excuse lackluster play from the O-line and the entire defensive unit. The team that looked like world beaters against San Fran last week was just an abberation.

Well, that certainly sucked.

As I sit here sleepy eyed after a late night shocker, it’s still a little weird to comprehend that roughly 12 hours ago my Mountaineers gagged away a chance at etching their names into football history.  Lots of miserable faces left the stadium last night after being undressed by the Scourge of the North, but none more so than the guys who strapped on the pads and donned those ugly-ass gold-on-gold uniforms.  We’re just fans…the players who gave it their all hurt way more than we do.

I guess I should be angry and upset.  After all, the team I pledged my allegiance to went from playing for all the marbles to being on the (still very financially lucrative) undercard in January.  Strangely, I’m not.  There is plenty of disappointment, as I had started buying into the title hype like everyone else.  As I was telling Al last night, ten years ago I would have been acting quite Irish – drunken in a bar pub ready to fight whomever crossed me (even though I was sure to get my ass kicked).  And ironically enough, it was following a loss to Pitt ten years ago that made me think seriously about assault charges.  Nowadays, though, I’m fairly calm.  I guess it’s either the other priorities like mortgages, kids, jobs.  Or the medication that keeps me even-keel.  Or just the fact that I’m getting mature and slow.  I don’t know.  It still sucks, but the sun rose today and there’s things to do.

If nothing else, we still get a major bowl bid and more trophies for the shelf.  Who knows when we’ll get another chance at the big stage. I’ll still be there, either alive or in spirit, rooting them on.
